Stuff Liberals and Conservatives Like: Exploring the Great Cultural Divide
I thought it might be instructive and amusing to compare the tastes of “blue” and “red” Americans. (Shall the twain ever meet?) See what you think.
With apologies to Christian Lander, author/webmaster of Stuff White People Like.

Nah – liberals like blues….. makes us feel attached to roots that usually aren’t our own….
😉
I know; it was hard to pick just one. I probably could have included every genre except polka, easy listenin’ and George M. Cohan. Good comment, though.
Of course, conservatives could never admit liking Vegas, to “immoral” and would never admit that the moon landing was the result of science. (they probably expected God to be waiting) On Delusions, we make our own Hells, and yeah, everbody is stupid, if not all, then part-time.
I was going over this list again, Jon Stewart as the Liberal sex symbol? You missed a great opportunity to make a Clinton Joke!
Berkeley was conservative until the 1960s and then became moderate after the 80s. Today Berkeley is an elite academic institution where the students are no more politically homogeneous than any other university. The largest student group on campus is the College Republicans. Also, considering that the Undergrad population is 65% Asian (mostly pursuing engineering/econ/science), Berkeley is no more a liberal bastion than MIT or Harvey Mud. Furthermore, Berkeley is also home to the Haas School of Business and the highest rated Econ program in the nation, beating out the traditionally conservative U of Chicago. The administration also destroyed several ethnic studies departments. Finally, Cal also has a thriving Greek System which produces very conservative and ambitious men and women.
As a recent Cal alum, and conservative, Its insulting to label Cal a liberal university just because of what happened in the 60s. That being said, the City of Berkeley is a cesspool of liberals (in the hills) and ghetto blacks (in the flats) with a university sandwiched in the middle.
Sorry, I guess my age is showing. My generation will always think of Berkeley a bastion of vociferous leftists. (As it is, the town is still a bastion of what I’d call lifestyle leftists.) Maybe Wisconsin or Michigan would be better choices, but they just don’t have the same brand recognition factor as Berkeley.
I am wondering if a student has to choose an University and has not a specific political orientation, what kind of University will she/he choose? Is not there the danger of indoctrination?
Back in my old Romania, the Universities indeed had ‘Politic” classes, but nobody gave a rat ass about them, we went to learn Math, Biology, Chemistry etc. We were not disturbed by clashes between parties, there was only one party and you didn’t need to go to University to know how Communism works – you were indoctrinated from kindergarten. However, here in the US, a free country, Universities should be apolitical and religion neutral.
Valdo: You’d think American universities would be dedicated to the pursuit of pure knowledge, but the liberal arts and social sciences have been dominated by doctrinaire leftists since my own college days (and that’s a LONG time ago). They politicize everything from literature to lifestyles.
